Thalmayr Leads JSU On First Day of NCAA Louisville Regional

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Senior Benedikt Thalmayr is eighth after a first-round 69 to lead the Gamecocks in the NCAA Louisville Regional on Monday. Thalmayr carded a 2-under score on the par-71, 7,217-yard University of Louisville Golf Club to open play in the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The lone senior on the Gamecocks roster made five birdies and closed the round with a stretch of seven-straight pars. The native of Ouching, Germany, led the Gamecocks, who shot a team score of 300 on the first day of the three-day tournament. They sit in 11thin the 13-team field with 36 holes to play. No. 11 Auburn leads at 8-under, two shots ahead of No. 1 Oklahoma State in second. Host Louisville is tied with Baylor for third. Thalmayr is eighth out of 75 golfers that are fighting to advance to the NCAA Championship. The top five teams and low individual not on one of those five team will advance from the regionals to compete for the national title. Sophomore Maximo Portais is tied for 44th after a 3-over 74 on Monday, while sophomore Jesus Montenegro's 78 has him tied for 67th. Sophomore Quim Vidal Mora is tied for 72nd, while Max Basler is 75th. The Gamecocks will be paired with Arkansas State and Southern Illinois in Tuesday's second round. Their first group will go off the 10thtee at 8:55 a.m. ET.
